Can't Stop the Serenity (
CSTS) began in 2006, less than one year after the release of
Serenity, as a tribute to the birthday of our creative master, Joss Whedon. Cities from around the globe were called to host charitable screenings of
Serenity to benefit
Equality Now, an organization that works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world. Joss has been continually
outspoken in his support of the organization and gender equality initiatives.
The Arizona Browncoats have participated in this annual global fundraising effort since its inception, raising $39,686.17 for Equality Now and other women's charities in the past four years. Globally, more than $350,000 has been raised for Equality Now. Locally, 20% of the proceeds from the Tucson screenings in 2007, 2008, and 2009 were donated to the Women's Foundation of Southern Arizona (
WFSA), while 20% of the proceeds from the Phoenix screening were donated to Growth Improvement for Female Teens (
GIFT) in 2007 and to the
Fresh Start Women's Foundation in 2008. In 2009, $1 from every ticket sold to the Phoenix event went back to the non-profit community venue that hosted our event,
MADCAP Theaters. With an effort that first began in the hearts of AzBc's Rebecca, Heather, and Chris, we've managed to keep up the good work in each subsequent year, proving that Browncoats really can do the impossible. The totals for each year are displayed below:

While the end goal is to raise money for a charitable cause, CSTS is also about the camaraderie of the Browncoat community and having fun. The screenings give Browncoats, old and new, another chance to see their Big Damn Heroes in action on the big screen and escape into the Whedon 'Verse, even if it's just for a few hours. Additionally, the Arizona screenings offer local Browncoats the chance to mingle with some of their own. So, we hope to see you at one of our shows.
